How We Define Self-Care

We intentionally broaden self-care beyond traditional definitions that often:

  • Emphasize products and services (consumerist)
  • Frame self-care as burnout prevention or productivity enhancement (capitalist)
  • Focus on the individual at the expense of relationships and collective conditions (colonial)

Through a wider lens, self-care becomes an ongoing internal process — one that holds both our personal needs and the external demands placed upon us — in service of individual and relational well-being.

For social workers, self-care must engage our inner emotional experience and the systems of oppression we work within. In this way, radical self-care supports our capacity for advocacy and change-making. It acknowledges the reality of our moment and helps us meet it with values alignment, authenticity, and interconnection.
